  41. Thank you for downloading Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 (WC4WIN95).
  42. To install and run Wing Commander IV for Windows 95, you must have the
  43. DOS version installed.
  44.  
  45. In addition, you will need Microsoft's DirectX 2. You can obtain 
  46. DirectX 2, from our web page. For more information on DirectX 2, 
  47. consult the README95.TXT file included in this package.

  51. [2.0]    Installation
  52.  
  53. Installation consists of a batch file which will prompt you with a 
  54. series of questions. Please read the questions carefully, and answer 
  55. [Y] for YES or [N] for NO to each one.
  56.  
  57. [2.1]    Locating Wing Commander IV for MS-DOS
  58.  
  59. If WC4 is not located in the default directory (C:\WC4), you will need 
  60. to know where on your hard drive the game is located to continue.
  61.  
  62. If you do not know where WC4 is located, you can use the following 
  63. steps :
  64.  
  65. 1)    Click Start
  66. 2)    Click Find 
  67. 3)    Click Files or Folders
  68. 4)    Click View
  69. 5)    Click Details
  70. 6)    In the Named field, type wc4.exe
  71. 7)    Click Browse
  72. 8)    Click drive C: (or another hard drive)
  73. 9)    Click OK
  74. 10)    Click Find Now

  76. If WC4 is installed, it will be listed under name. Look at the field
  77. "In Folder". WC4 is installed here. Write this down, for you will need
  78. later during the installation process.

  80. [2.2]    Command-line Parameters of INSTALL
  81.  
  82. If Wing Commander IV is in the default directory (C:\WC4) simply typee
  83. INSTALL.
  84.  
  85. If WC4 is not in the default directory, use section [2.1] to locate
  86. WC4. To install the Windows 95 version, open an MS-DOS prompt window
  87. (Start/Programs/MS-DOS Prompt).
  88.  
  89. Change to the directory where you have extracted these files.
  90. Type INSTALL followed by the directory name. 
  91.  
  92. For example, if you located WC4 in the folder C:\GAMES\WC4, you would type
  93.  
  94.     INSTALL C:\GAMES\WC4
  95.  
  96. Be sure to pay close attention to punctuation. The installation process 
  97. will prompt you with questions and then install the Windows version 
  98. accordingly.

  100. [2.3]    INSTALL Limitations
  101.  
  102. If the game is not in the default directory/folder (C:\WC4), you will 
  103. not be prompted to create a Desktop icon or a Program Group under 
  104. the Start menu.  
  105.  
  106. These two features are purely for ease in starting the game itself.
  107. A desktop icon is simply an icon that is placed on your desktop that, 
  108. when double clicked, will automatically start the game for you.  
  109. A program group is similar to a desktop icon except that it is located 
  110. in your Start Menu under 'Programs.'
  111.  
  112. For instructions on how to create a Desktop Icon, see section [2.5] of 
  113. this document.

  115. [2.4]    Manual Installation
  116.  
  117. To manually install Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 you will need 
  118. to copy the following files from the self-extracting archive that 
  119. you downloaded to the directory that contains your DOS version of 
  120. Wing Commander IV : WC4W.EXE, XANLIB.DLL and README95.TXT.
  121.  
  122. To do this through Windows 95, simply:
  123.  
  124. 1)    Open Explorer and go to the folder that contains the 
  125.     extracted files.
  126. 2)    Highlight the files WC4W.EXE, XANLIB.DLL and README.TXT 
  127.     by holding down the "CTRL" button on your keyboard while 
  128.     you click once on each of these files
  129. 3)    Once you are sure that these files are highlighted, select 
  130.     "Edit" from Explorer's tool bar (it's in the upper-left hand 
  131.     corner of the Explorer window)
  132. 4)    Select "Copy" from the drop down menu
  133. 5)    Go to the folder that contains your DOS version of 
  134.     Wing Commander IV
  135. 6)    Select "Edit" from Explorer's tool bar
  136. 7)    Select "Paste" from its drop down menu
  137.  
  138. At this time you should see Windows copying these files.  Once completed,
  139. you are ready to play!
  140.  
  141. To manually install Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 in a DOS 
  142. prompt, simply:
  143.  
  144. 1)    Change directories to the directory that contains the files you 
  145.     extracted from WC4WIN95.EXE 
  146. 2)    Copy the files WC4W.EXE, XANLIB.DLL and README95.TXT to the 
  147.     directory that contains the DOS version of Wing Commander IV 
  148.     (For example : if you extracted the contents of WC4WIN95.EXE 
  149.     to the "C:\TEMP" diretory and your DOS version of Wing 
  150.     Commander IV is located in the "C:\GAMES\WC4" directory, 
  151.     to copy all of the necessary files, your DOS commands should 
  152.     look as follows:

  154.         C:\TEMP>COPY WC4W.EXE C:\GAMES\WC4\
  155.         C:\TEMP>COPY XANLIB.DLL C:\GAMES\WC4\
  156.         C:\TEMP>COPY README95.TXT C:\GAMES\WC4\
  157.  
  158.     After typing each of these lines you should see the files copy.  
  159.     If you receive an error message, make sure you are in the correct 
  160.     directory and that your spelling and punctuation are correct.

  162. [2.5]    Creating a Desktop Icon
  163.  
  164. To create a desktop icon for Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 be sure 
  165. that you have successfully installed the game and then follow the 
  166. following steps :
  167.  
  168. 1)    Right-click your mouse on an empty area of your desktop.  This 
  169.     will give you a drop down menu with several choices one of which 
  170.     is "New"
  171. 2)    Left click on "New" 
  172. 3)    Select "Shortcut"
  173. 4)    This yields a window entitled "Create Shortcut,"  in the field
  174.     entitled "Command Line" type in the path to WC4W.exe (Usually 
  175.     C:\WC4\WC4W.EXE)
  176. 5)    Click on "Next"
  177. 6)    In the field entitled "Select a Title for the Program" type in
  178.     "Wing Commander IV for Windows 95"
  179. 7)    Click on "Finish" and you're done!

  183. [3.0]    Running Wing Commander IV for Windows 95
  184.  
  185. There are three ways you can start Wing Commander IV for Windows 95.  
  186.  
  187. First, you may simply start Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 through
  188. Explorer by opening Explorer, going to the directory where you installed
  189. WC4W.EXE and double clicking on WC42.EXE (for help installing 
  190. Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 please see section [2.0])
  191.  
  192. The second method is by double clicking on the desktop icon.  This will 
  193. put you directly into the game.  INSTALL.BAT will only prompt you to make
  194. a desktop icon if you have the DOS version of Wing Commander IV installed
  195. in the C:\WC4 directory.  If you would like to manually create a desktop 
  196. icon for Wing Commander IV for Windows 95, see section [2.5].

  198. The third method is by left clicking on the start button, clicking on 
  199. "Programs", clicking on "Origin" then clicking on "Wing Commander IV for 
  200. Windows 95"  You will only have this option, once again, if the DOS version
  201. of the game was located in C:\WC4.

  205. [4.0]    Troubleshooting
  206.  
  207. If, for any reason, you encounter difficulties using INSTALL.BAT to 
  208. install Wing Commander IV for Windows 95, please see section [2.4] 
  209. entitled "Manual Installation" to attempt to manually install the 
  210. Windows 95 version of the game.  If you continue to have problems 
  211. installing the game, feel free to contact Origin Product Support (see
  212. section [6.0])

  215. terms of running the game or any gameplay issues, please view the 
  216. accompanying help file, README95.TXT, which includes valuable information
  217. about DirectX2, Windows 95 troubleshooting techniques and specific hardware

  219. documentation accompanying the DOS version of the game.
